2K and 4K Movies
Digital movies are created by digitally scanning the original 35mm film and packaging the data into a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) movie file for distribution.
The most common distribution method currently in use is a portable Hard Disk Drive.
Most digital movies are currently distributed at 2K resolution with an increasing number of movies distributed in the enhanced 4K format. In fact a surprising number of new movies are created at 4K in the digital intermediate process but down converted to 2K for distribution. As the number of 4K projection systems increases, so to will the incentive to distribute more movies as 4K files. It is also worth noting that major studios are beginning to restore their back-catalogue of classic films at 4K resolution.
