New HD HDV HDR-FX1000 HVR-Z5U cameras from Sony

SONY BRIDGES GAP BETWEEN HIGH-DEFINITION PROSUMER AND PROFESSIONAL VIDEO PRODUCTION
One New Camera Brings Cinematic Film-Look for Amateur Videographers and Another Offers Advanced Production Capabilities for Directors of
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 10, 2008 – Sony is expanding its industry leading line-up of high-definition video products with two new HDV™ cameras designed to meet the needs of professionals and prosumers.
With the HDR-FX1000 Handycam® camcorder, more adept consumer videographers gain access to cinematic features, including 24P scanning and advanced color settings for around $3,200. With the HVR-Z5U camcorder, professionals will appreciate its native 24P recording and other professional features—all for less than $5,000—as well as tapeless recording capability through an optional CompactFlash™ adapter.
“The HDR-FX1000 is appealing to the amateur videographer shooting weddings or the aspiring cinematographer,” said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony Electronics. “The combination of film-like movie quality and advanced color settings makes it possible for prosumers to achieve the deep cinematic look they crave at a reasonable price.”

The HVR-Z5U camcorder offers a “step-up” solution for professionals who desire a more advanced set of features.
“Professionals need features like balanced audio, XLR inputs, timecode and more,” said Bob Ott, vice president of professional audio and video products at Sony Electronics. “They also need access to technical resources to help them with issues like integrating with non-linear editing systems. This is where a professional solution like the HVR-Z5U is an appropriate choice.”
Enhanced Image Capture
Both models use three of Sony’s ClearVid™ 1/3-inch CMOS sensor chips, which are designed to provide high sensitivity, deep resolution, high-speed reading, low noise and a wider dynamic range. The CMOS sensors capture full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, resulting in better picture quality when recorded onto miniDV tape in the HDV format (1440 pixels x 1080 lines). Each of the three sensors is dedicated to one color—red, blue and green—for natural, more accurate color reproduction.
With a 45-degree rotated pixel layout, the ClearVid CMOS sensor system offers outstanding pixel surface area while maintaining high resolution. The Exmor™ technology features a unique column-parallel analog-to-digital conversion technique and dual noise canceling, resulting in digital signals with extremely low noise. The technologies combine to allow the new camcorders to perform significantly better in low-light environments with sensitivity of 1.5 lux.
Both cameras use Sony’s XtraFine LCD™ (3.2-inch, 921,000 dots) and XtraFine electronic viewfinder (0.45-inch, 1,227,000 dots) for high-resolution and high-contrast images with remarkable color reproduction.
Ideal For Aspiring Cinematographers
The HDR-FX1000 is Sony’s first Handycam camcorder to feature progressive scan at 1080/24p and 30p, giving video productions a film-like look. Using a two to three pull down, the 24P scanned image is converted to 60i for easy editing with user’s existing software applications. CinemaTone Gamma™ and CinemaTone Color™ settings complement the 24P capabilities to create a rich dreamlike picture processing while three built-in neural density filters provide exceptional light control even in extremely bright environments.
Equipped with a refined level of optical performance, the HDR-FX1000 and the HVR-Z5U models are the first camcorders to have a Sony G lens with a 29.5mm wide-end viewing angle, extra-low dispersion glass and 20x optical zoom. The fixed lens is optimized to perfectly complement the cameras’ advanced image sensor and image-processing technology.
The HDR-FX1000 model enables prosumers to define their own manual settings for iris, gain, white balance, shutter speed and focus for increased creativity and control. Use of any of the three manual rings for adjustments to zoom, focus and iris provides even more flexibility.
Professional Video Production
The HVR-Z5U camcorder offers the addition of several features specifically designed for professional video production, such as progressive scan shooting at 1080/24P and 30P, DVCAM™ recording, timecode support and two XLR balanced audio inputs.
Professionals can record the native 24P/30P signal on to the videotape used in the camcorder or to CompactFlash cards – simultaneously or separately – with the optional HVR-MRC1K recording unit. This unit attaches directly to the back of the camcorder, eliminates the need for cables and automatically synchronizes with the recording action of the camcorder.
The recording unit can be directly attached to the new HVR-Z5U camera, as well as to Sony’s HVR-Z7U and HVR-S270U models. It will also work with other HDV camcorders using a supplied iLINK® (IEEE-1394) cable and shoe adapter.
The camcorder, and the HVR-MRC1K adapter will be compatible with Sony’s Professional 306x CompactFlash card. The recording times on an 8 and 16 GB CompactFlash card in HDV, DVCAM and DV format are approximately 36 and 72 minutes, respectively.
Availability
The HDR-FX1000 camcorder will be available in early November at authorized dealers nationwide, Sony Style® retail stores and online through www.sonystyle.com.
The HVR-Z5U professional camera is expected to be available in December for a suggested list price of $4950. The HVR-MRC1K recording unit should be out in October for a suggested list price of $940.

Press Release
SONY INTRODUCES THE WORLD’S FIRST CAMCORDER WITH SMILE SHUTTER TECHNOLOGY

SAN DIEGO, June 18, 2008 – Sony is taking the lead in the camcorder industry by introducing the first high-definition camcorder with both Smile Shutter™ and face detection technologies.

The HDR-CX12 Memory Stick® Handycam® camcorder can record full 1920 x 1080 HD video and 10-megapixel photos on Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media and any Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2) media cards. Roughly the size of a soda can (2.8-inches wide by 5.3-inches tall by 2.8-inches deep), this ultra-compact model will allow for easy transfer of video and stills from media cards to a compatible PC to share via email, uploading to the Internet or burning to disc.

With Sony’s unique Smile Shutter technology you can capture smiling photos and record video at the same time. When activated the technology will detect and automatically take a photo when your subject smiles - without having to switch to photo mode or press the photo button.

It also features child and adult prioritization so you can capture photos when your intended subject group smiles. This camcorder can even detect and capture a smile while in standby mode – just aim the camcorder and you’ll capture smiling moments.

“Advanced technologies such as ‘smile shutter’ make memory capture automatic so you can relax and enjoy the moment at hand,” said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony Electronics. “Leveraging these key technologies across multiple product lines is another example of Sony’s commitment to anticipate consumer needs by making video capture more seamless, easy and fun.”

Advanced Features and Performance

In addition to face detection technology, the camcorder is packed with powerful features such as ClearVid® CMOS sensor with Exmor™-derived technology for stunning video detail and clarity, a BIONZ™ imaging processor, an advanced Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* 12x optical zoom lens and Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization for smooth video and clear photos.

The camcorder will ship with a supplied 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2) media card so that you are ready to start recording almost straight out of the box. A supplied Handycam Station™ cradle makes for easy DVD creation with its One Touch Disc Burn button. Also bundled is Picture Motion Browser software to easily view, organize and store video and photos on a compatible PC.

Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications

Box Office: "Demystifying Digital Camera SpecificationsDemystifying Digital Camera Specifications"

April 3, 2008 - John Galt, Head of Advanced Digital Imaging at Panavision, and Larry Thorpe, National Marketing Manager at Canon Broadcast & Communications Division, came together to help untangle some common misunderstandings in Digital Camera Specifications

Panavision’s John Galt and Canon’s Larry Thorpe Make The Case for Meaningful Metrics Appropriate for The Age of Digital Movie Making
May 6, 2008 - Woodland Hills, Calif. —“Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications,” a seven-part series focusing on the complex science of image resolution and digital cinema cameras is now available on the Panavision website. The URL is: http://media.panavision.com/ScreeningRoom/Screening_Room/Box_Office.html.
The in-depth symposium is presented by two icons of digital cinema technology: John Galt, Panavision Senior Vice President, Advanced Digital Imaging; and Larry Thorpe, National Marketing Manager, Canon Broadcast & Communication Division.
A master class for motion picture professionals and students, the series is also in the minds of its creators a precursor to a broader, crucial industry-wide discussion: the need for a scientifically valid, objective method of assessing the quality of digital and film images.
Recorded in high-definition video, the symposium was held April 3 before an audience of invited guests in the Panavision Theater, located in the company’s world headquarters in Woodland Hills, Calif.
Imaging resolution science: a closer look
Throughout the series, Galt and Thorpe challenge the simplistic and inaccurate assumption that digital camera resolution is “all about the camera output pixels.” Instead, they help serious motion picture creators to understand the difference between optical sampling from camera imagers (where resolution is totally determined) and the camera digital sampling.
They explore in depth what is meant by Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and the compounding effect of lens MTF, camera MTF, and the MTF of subsequent production system elements.
Their discussion emphasizes that the relationship between the lens-camera MTF profile and associated residual aliasing – in both the horizontal and vertical domains – constitutes the only rational metric on imaging resolution. These two criteria apply to all 2/3-inch three-imager and to 35mm single-imager digital cameras. Nyquist theory, optical prefiltering and imager sampling lattice are explained in the context of camera design criteria that seek a pragmatic compromise between high MTF and minimum aliasing.
While camera manufacturers generally do not publish camera-specific information regarding lens-camera MTF and aliasing, various test charts are available to enable an objective assessment of both criteria. With these charts, fully demonstrated in the series, content developers can directly compare the performance between any two digital cameras regardless of image format size, number of imagers, or their optical sampling lattice.
Using the MTF metric, Galt and Thorpe conclude, digital movie makers now have better tools to help them gauge precisely what effect each step has on the production of the final image.
In addition to appearing on the Panavision website, the “Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications” series is being made available through various professional, trade and media Internet sites. For film schools, students and instructors, it is being showcased through the University Film and Video Association: http://www.ufva.org, in the news section. The UFVA is an international organization of almost 800 professionals and institutions involved in the production and study of film, video, and other media arts.
Transcripts of the seminars, with embedded slides, will soon be available to accompany the video presentation to facilitate class use or individual study.
“With programs like ‘Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications,’” said Bob Beitcher, President and CEO, “Panavision is trying both to educate our customers as well as raise the level of industry discussion about emerging technologies to focus on the science of what we do. I think that most everyone stands to benefit from a good look-and-listen at this stimulating presentation from two true experts.”
About the company Founded in 1954, Panavision Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of high-precision camera systems, comprising of film and digital cameras, lenses and accessories for the motion picture and television industries.

Clint Eastwood Investigates HD

As he began preparations to make back-to-back films about the historic World War II battle for Iwo Jima—Flags of our Fathers and the upcoming Letters from Iwo Jima—director Clint Eastwood reports that he seriously investigated using high-definition cameras to make the movies. Eastwood had DP Tom Stern’s camera team and HD camera operator Liz Radley conduct a series of tests to compare footage from various HD camera systems with 35mm film footage. At the end of the day, Eastwood chose to continue shooting film as he always has for the project, although he did bring both movies to Technicolor Digital Intermediates (TDI) for the first digital intermediates of his storied career. (See an upcoming issue of Millimeter for a detailed examination of the DI work done on both movies.)

>>His team came up with something Eastwood calls “my trashcan shots,” made with what Radley dubbed “CrashCams.” Basically, his team eventually settled on HDV cameras as their only viable option to meet Eastwood’s requirements. They sealed and stabilized a series of Sony HVR-Z1U HDV cameras inside prop 50-caliber machine-gun ammunition cases, operated them with out-of-the-box remote controls that come with those cameras, and gave the machine-gun cases to several extras acting in particular battle scenes. They then captured wild footage that editor Joel Cox eventually mixed into the movie.>>

HVR V1U Camcorder - with hard-disk recording unit

SONY UNVEILS NEW HDV CAMCORDER WITH 24P CAPTURE FOR PROFESSIONAL VIDEOGRAPHERS
New Model Features Three ClearVid CMOS Sensor Technology; Complemented by 60 GB Hard-disk Recording Unit for Integration with NLE Systems

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Sept. 19, 2006 -- Sony is expanding its line-up of HDV™ products for professionals with the HVR-V1U HDV compact camcorder.

The new model delivers true 24P progressive scan capture, and uses three of Sony’s ClearVid CMOS Sensor™ chips combined with Sony's Enhanced Imaging Processor™ technology to provide greater sensitivity, higher resolution, lower noise and a wider dynamic range.

The professional camcorder enables simultaneous or “hybrid” recording to both an attachable hard-disk recording unit (model HVR-DR60), which is optional, and to the videotape used in the camcorder.

Together, the new camcorder and hard-disk recording unit join Sony’s comprehensive range of HDV production systems. By the end of this month, the company expects to have shipped about 91,000 units of professional HDV products worldwide, since introducing the format in January 2005.

“Our entire family of professional HDV products is based on the concept of offering options for customers,” said Bob Ott, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ optical and network systems group. “This new camcorder and hard-disk recording unit deliver full production flexibility, and the HVR-V1U camcorder’s ability to capture true 24P images will appeal to any video professional desiring a ‘film-look’ for their work or for cinematographers working on tight budgets who still need high quality.”

Unlike "progressive-look" pictures interpolated from interlace scan camera systems, the HVR-V1U camcorder’s 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system natively captures progressive images at 24P, 30P or 60P, while maintaining full 1080 HDV resolution. Footage shot using the progressive scan feature can be played back on any of Sony’s HDV professional camcorders and VTRs, and be easily edited with compatible non-linear editing systems.

The new ClearVid CMOS Sensor combined with Sony’s Enhanced Imaging Processor technology deliver higher sensitivity and higher resolution. According to Ott, the EIP technology achieves wide dynamic range through the use of a unique algorithm that separates image data into its texture patterns and brightness components. The technology allows the camera’s sensor to produce natural and rich tones for both light and dark areas of an image.

The EIP technology also enables the high-speed processing required for capturing high-definition video and still images at extremely high levels of gradation and image reproduction.

The combination of the ClearVid CMOS Sensor and the EIP technologies also result in a feature called “smooth slow rec. (recording).” Due to the speed of the camcorder’s signal processing, video images can be captured at very high speeds, up to 240 fields per second, allowing very fast movements to be recorded in precise detail without creating artifacts or signal degradation.

The new hard-disk recording unit is a 1.8-inch drive with a 60 GB capacity and offering up to 4.5 hours of recording time in either the HDV or DVCAM/DV mode. The unit features Smart Protection, which is combined with a built-in “shock absorber” that automatically protects it at a force of up to three Gs. When the sensor detects that the unit is being dropped, it immediately turns the power off and retracts the head to help prevent damage to the media.

The new hard-disk recording unit also has a cache recording, or buffer memory, function, allowing up to 14 seconds of video and audio signals to be continuously buffered in the memory while the camera is in stand-by mode. When the operator presses “record” that content is captured and then recording can continue in real time.

The camcorder features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar® T* Lens with Extra-low Dispersion Glass and a 20x optical zoom lens with F2.8 at the telephoto end for greater light sensitivity and long-range image acquisition for maximum shooting flexibility.

A Digital Extender feature also enables the telephoto focal length to be extended by approximately 1.5 times to a maximum of 1100mm at 35mm conversion.

Additional features of the HVR-V1U camcorder include:

A timecode preset function
A TC Link to synchronize time codes
Two XLR microphone inputs for independent sound recording
A Camera Profile feature to adjust the camera settings of multiple cameras for multi-camera operations using MemoryStick Duo™ media
A 3.5-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) Clear Photo LCD plus™ viewing screen

New accessories, which will be introduced later this year, include:

HVL-LBP LED battery video light, which is powered by Sony’s infoLITHIUM® "L" Series battery (NP-F970/F770)
VCL-HG0862K – a wide conversion lens (exclusive for the HVR-V1U) that features a “bayonet joint” for easy attachment
SH-L35WBP LCD Hood (exclusive to the HVR-V1U)

Professional Media Optimized for HDV Applications

Complementing the new devices is Sony’s highest-quality 6mm HDV videotape, DigitalMaster™, which the company recommends for professional HDV applications. These 63-minute cassettes (model PHDVM63DM) use Sony’s Advanced Metal Evaporated II Technology and its dual-active magnetic layers.

The advanced AME II manufacturing process employs Hyper Evaticle IV magnetic grains, improved lubricants, and a refined Diamond-Like Carbon layer. DigitalMaster tape exhibits greater packing density of magnetic grains, higher retentivity, higher output and lower noise. The result is a more robust tape with 65 percent fewer dropouts and 90 percent fewer errors.

The HVR-V1U camcorder and HVR-DR60 hard-disk recording unit are expected to be available in December at suggested list prices of $4,800 and $1,800, respectively.

CANON RELEASES NEW HD 6X ZOOM XL 3.4-20.4mm L LENS FOR XL H1 HD CAMCORDER

CANON RELEASES NEW HD 6X ZOOM XL 3.4-20.4mm L LENS FOR XL H1 HD CAMCORDER
XL H1 HD CAMCORDER

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., July 26, 2006 – Providing cinematographers, broadcasters and video industry professionals with a growing range of acquisition solutions, Canon has expanded its array of HD optics for the XL H1 HD camcorder with a new 6X wide angle HD zoom lens. Building upon an already growing system of accessories, the Canon HD Video Lens 6X Zoom XL 3.4-20.4mm L lens gives XL H1 HD camcorder users greater creative control in a variety of shooting conditions. Available in November, the lens will carry an estimated selling price of $2,999*.

As a world-renowned manufacturer of optics for broadcast and professional photographic solutions, Canon reserves the "L-series" designation (denoted by a red-stripe around the lens) for its highest quality photographic lenses. The 6X XL Wide 3.4 - 20.4mm L-series zoom lens features UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) glass elements to produce high-quality HD images with low distortion. All lens elements are treated with a multi-coating to reduce flare and ghosting

The new wide-angle lens provides users with an extensive range of focal lengths from 24.5 to 147mm (in 35mm photographic terms) that would otherwise not be possible with a fixed lens, giving shooters the versatility of a zoom and the creativity of a wide-angle lens. To take that a step further, the lens features a manual iris ring (maximum aperture of f/1.6 - 2.6) and a distance display function to aid focus, so users can more accurately control the exposure and feel of their shot.

The lens allows users to switch between two Neutral Density filters (1/6, 1/32) for best performance in bright lighting conditions. The lens includes a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) feature, which creates a AF range suitable for normal shooting situations from one meter to infinity. This feature prevents the lens from focusing on dust particles that can occasionally appear on the surface of the lens. For macro applications, the AF range can be extended to a minimum focusing distance of 20mm. Canon also built focus and zoom presets into the lens for ease-of-use when shooting.
